World Wonders ProjectWorld Wonders is one aspect of Google’s incredible resource, The Cultural Institute. We were asked to create a launch video which would inspire children and adults to not only browse the wonders of the world, but also utilise it as an educational resource.
The result was a campaign which manages to not only show how inspirational the product is, but which also houses the site navigation successfully within the creative.Credits:

Endangered Languages ProjectIt’s hard to believe the rate of languages which die out, never to be heard again. That is why The Endangered Languages Project came to exist; an online tool for the preservation and study of the world’s endangered languages. We were tasked with communicating the plight of some of these languages within the launch film, whilst also displaying the topline functionality of the site. It became a valuable resource for anyone who spoke an endangered language. Animation seemed like the perfect way to communicate this multi-layered message without it becoming heavy handed.Credits:

Your Film Festival – Animated Launch FilmYour Film Festival gave budding filmmakers the chance to upload their own creations to youtube to be judged by their peers, The winners would have their films judged by Michael Fassbender and Ridley Scott. The campaign was threefold in that we created an animated launch film to communicate this first time and unique message to the youtube community, then a live action inspirational film and finally momentum films with Michael Fassbender. The animated film communicated the message whilst adhering to the strict palatte and design guidelines of youtube and the festival itself.Credits:

Your Film Festival – Live Action Launch FilmThe second part of the campaign; we asked youtube successes to tell us their story. Timeframes dictated we couldn’t shoot over three continents ourselves, so we communicated shooting guidelines to the directors themselves and had them upload the footage in time for us to craft the edit for launch. Being that they are filmmakers, themselves, they relished the opportunity. The result was an insightful look into the world of relative unknowns who became players in Hollywood after uploading their films to YouTube.Credits:

Your Film Festival – Michael FassbenderThe third part of the campaign; we were asked to make a series of films with Michael Fassbender giving his advice to the would-be filmmakers. A simple interview set-up, we got more than we needed and Michael was a pleasure to work with on the day. Essentially, these are a series of simple vignettes, but effective and inspiring none-the-less through their simplicity.Credits:

Science Fair 2012 – LaunchA personal highlight of my career at google was being involved in this fantastic project. The world’s largest online Science Fair where kids form all over the glob submit their often remarkable science projects. Working closely with Toaster, a google creative lab partner and designer Nick Radford, we aimed to make an animation that would be informative yet inspiring without leaning too much towards the younger generation.Credits:

Science Fair 2012 – CERN Momentum filmAnother facet to the Science Fair campaign was creating momentum films to keep the interest of potential applications throughout the sign up process. One of the prizes on offer was a trip to the Large Hadron Collider or LHC at CERN, Geneva. Whilst there, we witnessed preparation for the collider to be turned on again – an historic moment. We were very conscious not to bog the film down in weighty science, but wanted it to be more philosophical in its approach.Credits:

Google Public AlertsWe were approached by the google.org team to help create a launch film for this new service. The message could have been in danger of becoming incredible melancholic on account of the subject matter, we therefore decided that animation would perhaps be the best way to communicate the message. A painstaking process, the animation involved sketching over stock footage but the resulting film was definitely worth the effort.Credits:

Impossible.comWe were approached by Lily Cole to create a film communicating her project: Impossible.com. A peer-to-peer network which enables people to share their skills & talents in exchange for the skills of another. Premiered at Lily’s talk for Google Zeitgeist, this film was to communicate the idea in an entertaining format. A low budget project and turned around in five days, some of the Across The Pond team (myself included) even leant their voices to the animation.Credits:

More than a MapWe were asked by the Geo team to communicate what the potential of maps could be for small businesses in both retail & logistics. A potentially ‘dry’ brief, we tried to make it as light hearted yet as informative as possible by using the animation talents of The Foreign Office. The resulting animation doesn’t come across as a typical B2B message.Credits:

Gone Google: Blue ZooThe Gone Google campaigns are storers based around individuals who have successfully used google products to the benefit of their businesses. Blue Zoo are a BAFTA winning London based animation company whose programme ‘Olive the Ostrich’ couldn’t exist if it wasn’t for using google products. A great narrative and the guys were more than willing to let us follow them during the process of making an episode. A B2B message which feels consumer focused.Credits:

Kite Surf in 360The first of our 360 films we shot on Necker Island and one of my personal favourites. This was one of the Virgin group’s first forays into 360 filming and as such we had a very successful partnership with facebook who heavily promoted the series. A great voice over from Richard guides us through why the sport is so important to him adds to the atmosphere of the piece.Credits:

Virgin Disruptors: Megan SmithVirgin Disruptors was our thought leadership event which attracted brilliant speakers from across the globe including Richard himself. My responsibilities on the programme were to create launch films, produce the live stream and to create momentum pieces. There are a few I could choose from but this collaboration with brilliant NOMINT and the excellent Megan Smith is one of my favourites. Shot in LA and then animated back in London, it was a logistic challenge but the results are very pleasing.Credits:

North London Half Marathon: Mo FarahWe were tasked with creating a launch film for the newly created ‘Virgin Sport’ which would inspire people to enter the North London Half using their newly appointed ambassador Mo Farah. We had a morning to shoot with Mo at the Nike HQ in Beaverton, US. It was very cold and rainy morning which only added to the atmosphere. Mo was a pleasure to shoot with and gave us more than 100%. No track and dolly on this shoot on account of budget, only a golf cart and a Sony FS-7 with prime Hasselblad lenses! The result speaks for itself however.Credits:

A history of Virgin in 114 secondsVirgin hotels were launching their first property in Chicago and as part of the event, they wanted a film which would showcase the entire history of the Virgin Group to wow the guests as they walked in. A day in the life of Richard BransonIt’s not often you get to step into the shoes of the Virgin Group’s founder, but long term collaborator David Betteridge and I had the pleasure of such an experience. We literally followed Sir Richard Branson as he opened a new gym in Cape Town, launched a new partnership with Virgin Money and a behind the scenes look at how he spends his day. It was an eye opening and unforgettable filming experience.Credits:

Stop Wildlife TraffickingWorking with PR Gurus Manifest, we created an activation supporting WWF’s call for world leaders to commit to ending the illegal wildlife trade by taking a life-sized holographic elephant around London. A petition from WWF demanded stronger efforts to tackle the corruption that enables the trade, better support for rangers and the closing of all ivory markets. An exhaustive twenty-one hour day, we had to ensure social media assets and b-roll where ready for press first thing in the morning and last thing at night. An intense project but we succeeded in smashing WWF’s target whilst also garnering some great public and industry press for the project.Credits:
